Energy Independence Bill would enable a smart mandate for home batteries
The Energy Independence Bill would give ministers power to introduce secondary legislation requiring battery energy storage systems placed on the Great Britain market to be sold with smart functionality. The factsheet says consumers would retain the option not to use that functionality. This is an enabling power, not a rule currently requiring every battery to be smart and not a compatibility approval for any product or tariff.
Open trackerEnergy Independence Bill targets charges on re-exported electricity
The Energy Independence Bill would give the Secretary of State power to remove certain supplier charges from electricity re-exported through battery storage or vehicle-to-grid systems, and from demand used to absorb excess renewable generation. The measure could improve the economics of flexibility, but it does not itself remove charges today, set a household payment or create a retail battery tariff.

E.ON lists 17.5p/kWh Next Export Premium v3 for qualifying E.ON-installed solar or battery systems, 13p/kWh Next Export Exclusive v3 for qualifying E.ON import customers, 6p/kWh variable Next Flex Export v1, and 8.5p/kWh Next Export Business v1 for qualifying SME or commercial generators. Installation date, import-tariff, system-size, metering and fixed-term conditions differ by tier; the headline rates are not generally available to every home.
